For the past two years Masterton CEO, David Masterton has slept out in the cold as part of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout and now he’s doing it again on 23rd June 2016.
“I think it’s really important to raise awareness and funds to combat the issue of homelessness,” David said.
With little more than a beanie, a sheet of cardboard and a cup of soup, the Vinnies CEO Sleepout gives people a tiny glimpse of what life is like for countless Australians. But more importantly it helps to raise funds and awareness so we can start to make real and actionable changes to the lives of people who find themselves without a place to call home.
The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that in Australia over 105,000 people are without a place to call home. Surprising to many in our community is that 60% of these people are under 35, 44% are women and 13% are under the age of 12.
Behind each of these numbers is a human story of isolation and in terms of the challenges these fellow Aussies face, sleeping rough is only the tip of the iceberg.
“No matter how big or small your contribution you’ll be helping to make a difference to someone’s life,” David said. “It’s a cause I truly believe in.”
David said the most humbling moments at the past sleepouts have been speaking to people who, with the help of Vinnies climbed out of depression and homelessness and into housing and work.
“I’ve seen how much of a change your donations can make to people’s lives so please help out as much as you can,” David said.
Making a difference
At Masterton we believe every Australian deserves a safe place to call home and by working together we can bring the issue of homelessness to the forefront, inspire action and most importantly effect long-term change.
Please donate now and help to raise funds and awareness in the fight against homelessness.
